Monstruosidades

Moving sucks. I mean it. I've done it almost 30 times now, and every single time I move I throw away stuff, I find stuff I didn't remember I had, I lose stuff and I wonder at HOW MUCH STUFF I HAVE. But it's pretty and I love it XD

Also, I've discovered I have some weird obsession about paper. That is, I've always know I've had it, but I seriously love it. I have whole batches of... dunno, around 20 different kinds of textures and weights - all of them blank. Gotta use it!!

Anyway. Ahem. Monsters. One afraid of his kind under the bed. The other, aware of the pros of floss.

Mudarse me choca, apesta y me recontra patea.

A friend of mine from work - who used to be my teacher and my thesis counselor - and I found an open contest in Conaculta, the mexican art institution, calling out for animated digital books. It sounded like fun, and we decided to try our hand on it with a series of stories she wrote with some students when they were all in their fifteens.

What came out was quite a few weeks of crazyness - mainly the reason I haven't updated these days -, laughs and a LOT of sleepless nights, but we're really happy about the way it's coming out.

By rules of the contest I'm losing some rights to these characters since Conaculta will own them now, but that doesn't mean I can't post them here :)

These are some goblins called "Gracias" (or Thank You's). They live inside children's mouths, so, naturally, they were eventually designed as taste buds. The one choosed was the tallest one, but the little one also made an appearance.

I just loved this jump n.n

Some bugs who are really metal hard-core fans, and a little girl from a poem about the Sun.

And finally, a very, very old book. Who knows what our children will read? With Kindles and ipods and stuff around, maybe they won't even know what paper is.

I'm barely trying out Blogger's new interface. It's... weird. But interesting. I mean, just today I was encouraging my students to try new stuff every day to give their brains some exercise, I can't back out n.n

Sorry for the lack of posts. Thankfully, this time it's not from procrastination. Well, maybe the lack of posting itself is: that's the problem with being an analogue illustrator who decides not to touch the computer for long periods of time unless needed: you miss e-mails, you forget to post, and you end up with piles of drawings you never post.

Just today I finished a birthday piece for three friends of mine. They were all born in August, one on the 13th and two on the 28th - hence, I opted to create a single illustration in three pieces, since it fitted and I had wanted to do so for a while now.

I don't really know whom I'll give which. I guess I'll just let them pick one blindly or something.

Oh look: Blogger's Interface lets me do new stuff with pictures. Interesting... I wonder if it'll let me put them all on the same line.

...Nah. It won't. Or I couldn't figure out how. Most likely. But it let me justify the text. Score! :D

See, the interesting bit is this: Each of these pieces was created and painted individually, but the trees were arranged so that altogether, they could create different compositions.  The birds couldn't be divided - imagine a tail here and a head there - but the trees were designed so that the flow in the branches and the trunk lend themselves to the idea, and to make sure that not only they would connect with each other in every way I arranged them; but also that, when separated, they could stand alone in both composition and interest.

Here they are, all connected and pretty in all different ways. Scroll down, please.

Yeah, I know. The middle one. But hey, at least the branches fit - let's pretend there's a straight tree trunk in that forest. :S

Algo más normal

So. Back to business as usual.

There's a lot of watercolor fighting to get out of the bag first, but this little doodle beat them all. The tablet was closer at hand.

How to win in Bejeweled

My little brother's my pal, my gym coach, my sifu and my guru. But he can be a little annoying at times.

Glad to have you back, bro.

Macabreces

I bought John Culhane's Fantasia book some time ago, and since then I've been on a Fantasia frenzy. It was already one of my favorite movies, but now I see it with a different light than when I was six years old ;) Take Chernobog, for instance: I never noticed until reading said book that because he never actively looked at the camera, you actually felt safe while looking at him; as if some kind of window were placed between him and his macabre looks and the audience. So... why not make him turn around all of a sudden and stare at you?

How to get ideas: dentro de un librito verde limón

I finally finished my green sketchbook. A lot of those pages aren't meant to be seen by other than me, since they're mostly scribbles and quick thumbnails that sometimes even I don't understand. However, in many moments of boredom came many sketches blog-worthy - some of them I'm even working to fully realized illustrations.

The one below, for example, started as the pen doodling of a tiger. Then, a fish. And then, my concept for the little girl on the plane in The Strain, which really creeped me out and I had just seen the night before (reading, of course) coming back from the dead to his dad by herself just to suck the life out of him with her stinging sucker. Strigois. No glowing allowed. (spoiler: highlight to read). This is one of those I was saying I want to color and all :D

Pen Sketch of the USA-Mexico border building where you get permissions. The line was pretty slow...

This one - the one of the Police truck - is actually from life as well. What I love about it is this: we see this image every single day, of policemen picking up people who are without documents. Deported men mostly - occupational hazard of being in a border city, I guess). But that man was actually smiling. The contrast between his face and the other's made this stuck and, at the first time I had, I drew it..

And a little Voldemort turnaround for a little project I'm working on. Even though I love Ralph Fienne's Voldie, this is the one I keep picturing whenever I read; and since the final movie is almost out... my brother keeps saying this is the end of his childhood. :)
