Paquidermos en el circo

I anticipate a couple of sleepless nights: I'm in the last phase of the children's book... In the meantime, a bit of procrastination put to good use: Since I'm inking it all, I thought of inking something for just the fun of it.

Incidentally, I've always loved circuses. When I was little it was the most magical thing I could go to. Ask my mom: she got tired of going every weekend. Growing up, though, I realized how wrong for animals they are, but there's also quite touching about the way humans and wild animals can seem to coexist in harmony... should inspire us all to do the same in real life.

Here's a small taste of what I've been working on these past few days. This is my first children's book  - it shall be a short one, but a very detailed one, as you can see... This is why I haven't posted stuff as usual! Stay tuned :D

It's funny: for this piece, I could visualize the flower and the lamp. Then, I decided to crew it with a little axolotl - cause I insist, I adore those little critters. And then... who should be passenger??? That was a HUGE dilemma for the entire time - they weren't even on the sketch. Then - screw it: little people. Medieval people. Done!

I think it's one of those times when the setting, the lightning, the locals are perfect, except the loud tourists on the picture.

Vulpes vulpes

I think we would all enjoy having such a playmate to finish and snuggle tired after a wonderful day...

Casa Embrujada

Walking around with my brother, starting to get used to the city, we came across this. I'm pretty sure it's haunted - if it's not, then why on earth did I feel so so compelled to go back and draw it, and then again when my time wasn't enough?? Specially after looking at it for the time it took me to do this - I'm absolutely convinced that there's something really special going on in there...

...Maybe it's a ghost club house or something.

¿Gente muerta? ¿Fantasmas amigables? ¿Señoras del porfiriato - cortesanas del porfiriato??

Becas y Bosques

I seem to be trying to create some sort of forest - trees are pouring out of me. And I swear, it's unconscious: I'm barely starting to notice... I mean, I already knew I liked them - but I guess it's the many old old trees around me in this city evoking this...

Anyway. Tomorrow, no trees. Or maybe just one. n.n

Btw: It's almost Halloween time... costume ideas yet?

PS: This morning I learned that I've been granted a scholarship to study at the ENSAD - École Nationale des Arts Decoratifs - in Paris, for 10 months in their illustration department on October 2013... I couldn't jump high or fast enough n.n

Árboles por doquier

Allow me to continue with the incessant flow of work, since otherwise people will think I'm simply hidden within a hole in the ground when in truth, I'm working my eyes out n.n

I sincerely believe every living thing have spirits in them! Perhaps not as literal as this one, but why else would they all be so beautiful??

¡Sigamos posteando!

The Professor & La Fille

The Professor & La Fille, by Damien Rice, always brings to my mind a very yellowy and nostalgic environment. After hearing it for the eleventh time the other day while my iTunes was in shuffle, I took it as a sign.

Ok, link: The Professor & La Fille.

You know it's bound to happen... ;)

Queso Cheddar

If there's something I love, is cheese. But when you mix it with many different kinds of wine... Gosh, I love wine tastings :D And these little guys do to :)

Painted Waffle

Creative Allies posted a contest for illustrating the cover of Alessi's Ark's new album, Notes from the Tree-house, and a friend passed over the link for me. Even though I'm not a keen advocate for spec work, her music really did inspire me and made me see the cover - so I grabbed my coffee and started sketching. Afterwards, this led to actually painting with coffee - which I hadn't done since my thesis project. Obviously the pink is watercolor (I wanted to use hibiscus, but I couldn't find any) but the coffee allowed me once again to get the sepia mood I wanted. Besides; best smelling painting ever n.n

The image's full with symbols from the album: not only title songs - The Dog, The Horse, Constellations - but also bits of lyrics, like the kite, the birds and the notes on the book and the umbrella. Also, that's our dog Waffle making  a special cameo - remember her??

Anyway - if you like it, make sure to let the people at Creative Allies know! :D

Ok - going into more serious matters. A lightning study - because we never know what may be up the stairs... specially when it's dark. And the stairs creak. And it's raining outside. And... you get the point n.n

Olimpiadas

I'm staying home to work on a children's book, and THANKFULLY my aunt changed the channel she was watching to the foot-ball finals between Mexico and Japan. We're this close to a gold medal - and I could start working. I was getting way too distracted with synchronized swimming... the French duet's routine with extracts from Swan Lake gave me chills!! Even though they didn't win - the russian duet won gold (with a very impressive 9.8! gotta look that up in youtube later), Spain got silver and China bronze - I really was inspired by Sara Labrousse and Chloe Willhelm's movements, costumes and music. Loved it!

La Patita y las cajitas

Remember that time I promised I'd do one every day? Yeah, that was before our stuff in the moving finally arrived. Now I have a whole bunch of boxes - is gargantuanally huge!! - that we have to unpack. Before, you know, I pack again. To compensate, this is even more elaborate than it should.

In the meantime, La Patita - again, from Cri-Crí. I wanted to evoke the feeling of those little towns with all of their houses painted in red and white - Cuitzeo, for example - and I really liked the way it turned out! This is one of the most popular songs he has, and it speaks of this Duck who goes to the market to buy food for her little ducklings, but she's poor and has no money to do so. It's really sad and beautiful at the same time.

Ahora, si me disculpan, seguiré desempacando :)

Cri-Cri: Llueve

When I was little, my everyday tunes would be the ones by Francisco Gabilondo Soler, known to us children as "Cri-Cri". His songs told stories and moods that I just adored, and still do. So I feel like it's time to pay an homage to him: Apart from my everyday work, I shall create a quick piece inspired by his songs each day. :)

Today? One of my favorites. "Llueve" tells the story of little bunnies waiting for the rain to pass so that they can go and run around in the fields. The mood of the opening of this song has always haunted me, and I can't help hum it whenever it rains n.n
